Happy All Saints Day!

Today Kirby's school celebrated All Saints Day. It was absolutely priceless watching the 150 students parade around the outside of the church and to the prayer garden, where they all sang "When the Saints Go Marching In", and prayed together. I did not see one child who wasn't dressed like a saint. When I first heard that we would need to figure out which saint Kirby wants to be and come up with some sort of costume, I thought, "Now how do you make a bunch of people who wore tunics look different?" I thought surely every girl would be dressed like St. Therese and every boy like St. Francis. Far from it! I couldn't believe the different saints I saw represented. It was a reminder that people from all walks of life serve as models of Christianity for us.

Kirby decided he wanted to be St. Stephen, the Church's first christian martyr, who was stoned to death for blasphemy in the year 35 AD. With a little fabric glue and a borrowed tunic, I was able to come up with a costume I felt quite proud of. And, Kirby was thrilled to wear it to school (which is what made me feel the best). Every child in the school gave an oral report on their saint to their class. The saints parade was followed by a good old fashioned All Saints Day party, complete with loads of sugar, punch and games. Don't worry - these Catholic kids weren't deprived of Halloween...the school put on a huge bash for all families last Friday night!
Gosh - you would almost believe they are
saints by looking at this picture (do not be fooled!)
