Happy Birthday to Me...

I couldn't help putting in a shameless plug for my favorite secular holiday - my birthday. Actually, it's not officially my birthday yet, I still have about 45 minutes to go, but I'm up late trying to catch up on my online course and decided it was time to plug into my blog after almost a week.

A week! Yikes! Where does the time go? I had such great blogging plans. I wanted to send out photos of the 19 1/2" trout that Connor caught last weekend, and of the boys paddle-boating with their friends. I wanted to send pictures of baby Ollie's baptism, and write an ode to my husband for Father's Day. I guess this shows my true colors, that I'll actually sit down and take the time to write when it has to do with me...with my birthday.

I can't help the fact that I love my birthday and I always have! My mom, one of 13 children says there was never a huge "to do" over a birthday when she was growing up. There were just too many kids. So she made it her job to make my sisters and me feel very special on each birthday. This included getting to pick a birthday cereal (the one time each year we could buy sugar cereal) and choose what was for dinner (We've implemented both of these with our kids). The gifts were always thoughtful and fun, and I have many memories of Mom and Dad looking on excitedly as we opened them.

But, as special as my birthday is, and considering I missed posting on Father's Day, I want to list here all of the things that I'm thankful for; the things that make me feel exceedingly blessed:
  • I married someone who is a better father than I ever imagined - even though I knew before I married him that he'd be a great one
  • I get told "I love you" every single day, and not just by my kids, but by Husband. Also by my sisters and parents - and friends! I know there are many people who go through a day without being told that
  • I married someone who kisses our boys every day and openly expresses his love for them
  • Husband sneaks into the boys' room every night to look at them sleeping, before he goes to bed
  • My mom and I talk every day - at least once, often more
  • My sisters and I talk every day
  • I live 20 minutes in any direction from my mom, sisters, aunt and uncle, and cousins
  • I have friends that cook each other meals when one of us is down or in need
  • I have friends who are wonderful examples of faith to me
  • We have never not been able to pay our mortgage or get medical help that one of us needs
  • Birds have moved into our neighborhood - finally! - and they wake us up each morning
  • Genmaicha tea and my friend Michelle who introduced me to it.
  • The way the boys talk to each other every night between bunks
  • My in-laws; you don't get to pick in-laws, but these are the ones I would have picked!
  • My friends' kids - the children my children are growing up with
  • My life - I'm not being corny or trite here; I really love my life. It's not always easy, and we're not a perfect family, but by gosh I've got the most amazing three guys to go through this adventure called life with.
Thanks for indulging me in reading that long list. I really do have it good, don't I? Oh - and if you want to see something really amusing, you should see the looks on people's faces when one of my kids says, in the cereal aisle, "Oooh, I love lucky Charms, remember when I got it for my birthday? Mom, can I get Lucky Charms again for my birthday this year?"
